Choose relevant examples from the portfolio
A video editing portfolio should help you judge the job you are hiring for. Watch a complete podcast if you need podcast editing. For a YouTube editor, look at the opening, the explanation and the pacing through a full video. For product ads, check that the product is still easy to understand.
The best video editing portfolio for your brief is not necessarily the one with the most effects. Ask about the editor’s role in each sample and choose two pieces that resemble your project. That gives your first conversation something concrete to work from.
Agree on the files before uploading
Keep camera footage, voice recordings, music and brand files in clearly named folders. Send original footage when possible and mark any missing material. Use a sharing method both sides can access, with permissions appropriate to the project.
If the files are large, discuss whether proxies will help. Decide who keeps the originals, how long the project needs to be retained and whether source project files are part of the handover. These small decisions prevent confusion later.
Make the review process practical
Agree on a first-cut date and the times when both sides can review or speak. India-based does not automatically mean round-the-clock availability. A short overlap window and clear written feedback are usually more useful than constant messages.
Collect comments in one place with time stamps and one person approving the changes. Review the story first, then the finishing details. New footage, a new script or extra languages may change the scope rather than count as a small correction.
Confirm what will be delivered
Write down the main edit, cutdowns, captions, aspect ratios and any alternate openings. Check the final files on the channels where they will be used. If the project includes a shoot, discuss the location separately from the remote edit.
